Listing Evidence Coordinates | Back to User Tips
There are 3 ways to get a list of coordinates for the
information in your scene.
1. Under the MapScenes menu ->
Coordinate Point Utilities -> List Points (Used and Unused) -> List
Points
(You must know the point number range to be listed so they can be entered
manually at the prompt)
2. Under the MapScenes menu -> Print
/ Edit / View Reports -> Coordinate Listing
(You must know the point number range to be listed so they can be entered
manually at the prompt)
3. Under the MapScenes menu ->
Coordinate Point Utilities -> Graphic Coordinate Editor
(You may select points visually on screen, enter in descriptions or use other
methods to select them)
Lets look at each option and see how to use it and what you
get from it
1. Under the MapScenes menu ->
Coordinate Point Utilities -> List Points (Used and Unused) -> List
Points
The List Points command requires that you give it the starting and ending point
of the range you wish to list.
When you pick on the command you will see the following prompt in the command
prompt area:
listp
List Points:
Enter Range like: Point#..Point# :
At this point you are being asked to enter in the point range that you wish to
list. An appropriate response might be:
1..10
Note the double dot ".." between the starting point number and the
ending point number. Also note that there are no spaces between any of them.
In this example we are asking for a list of evidence points starting at 1 and
going as high as 10. After you type in the numbers as shown, press the enter
key and you will get a listing similar to the following:
Start Point:1 End Point:10
1 N: 28.7839 E: -26.8890 El: 0.0000 D:zcl
3 N: 37.1444 E: 8.8421 El: 0.0000 D:zcl
4 N: 25.6985 E: -13.2535 El: 0.0000 D:ZCL
5 N: 25.5989 E: 9.1406 El: 0.0000 D:cl
6 N: 49.9358 E: -9.7168 El: 0.0000 D:
7 N: 54.0908 E: 49.8939 El: 0.0000 D:
Enter Range like: Point#..Point# :*** Cancel ***
Notice that only the points that exist in the entered range are listed. In this
example, point number 2 and point numbers 8, 9 and 10 do not exist in the scene
so are not listed.
To end the command press the ESC key on your keyboard or pick the button
near the top left of the screen, with your mouse.
Now, where did the listing of the points go? The listing went to 2 locations
automatically. The first is the command prompt area, the second was the
viewlog.
The command prompt area simply allows you to scroll back up the page to review
them on screen. You may flip to the larger command prompt area by pressing the
F2 function key or by picking the button near the top
of the screen. (picking it again flips you back to the normal screen again)
On the other hand, if you pick on the option bar,
you have the ability to print either the entire file or if you use your mouse
to Pick-Drag and highlight the interested data, you can pint just that
highlighted portion. The print command is found in the viewlog screen under the
File menu.
2. Under the
MapScenes menu -> Print / Edit / View Reports -> Coordinate Listing
This command is similar to the first one but it also
creates a file on your hard drive that can be opened in most word processors,
at any time, so it can easily be printed or added to a report.
When you pick this command you will be asked to enter in
a file name, and make sure it is in the desired location on the hard drive.

|
In this example I made sure my file was going to be saved
in the Forensic Scenes folder with the name Point_Report.TXT.
Once the location and name were correct, I picked the Save
button to continue. |
3.
At this point you get the same prompt as we did in
option 1). If you answer it in the same way and then exit the command in the
same way, you see the following window on screen.
4.
The location and file name are shown at the top of the
window and the report is displayed in the window and can be printed by going to
the File menu and picking on the print option. This will look very similar to
the viewlog screen as it uses the same editor. To close this window - pick on
the X in the top left corner of this window.
5. Under the
MapScenes menu -> Coordinate Point Utilities -> Graphic Coordinate Editor
Using the graphic Editor may seem a little different but
in general all you are doing is temporarily grouping some points so they can be
printed at the same time.
Start the command from the menu or from the Option Bar
(in the newest update). You will be asked for a Group Name.
Being that this is a temporary grouping only, the name
is not important so simply type in the number 1 for the name. Then pick OK to
continue.

This dialog has many different ways
for you to select the points you wish to list.
One of the more common ways might be to use the Standard
(Window Crossing .) option. This permits you to select the points to list by
simply using your mouse and windowing them.
Another common method might be to list all the points with
the same description. To do this pick the Description (with Wildcards eg.
HP*) option. When you do you can enter the description you assigned to the
points in the field or office. If you want to list all the Bullet Casings,
then typing in that description will find them all automatically.
You can try some of the other options as well, either on
their own or in conjunction with the others.
Once you have all the points you need to list, pick the
LIST button. |
7.
After you have picked the LIST button, the points are
output to the Command Prompt Area and the Viewlog, just like they were in
option 1) above.
However, before you go to print them, you need to exit this
command first. Make sure the Ungroup on exit option has a check mark in it (as
shown above). Then go ahead and pick the Exit button to exit the command.

|
As you do so, you will be asked to confirm that the temporary group we
created should be ungrouped again. Always answer YES when running this
command for the purpose of listing points.
|
Now you are free to go and print the listing, as described
above in option 1).
For more information on the other capabilities of the
Graphic Editor, please refer to the Help in MapScenes or the Technical Note on this web-site.
Can we change the number of decimal places reported for the
above options?
Yes you can change the number of decimal places reported but
you must do this prior to running any of the 3 options above.
Under the Settings menu -> Drawing Setup Parameters
The only change you should make is to the Linear Units -
Decimal Places. No other options in this dialog box should be touched or
changed!
Pick the number of decimal places desired for the printout
and then pick the OK button to finish the command.
Now you are ready to go to one of the 3 options above to get
a printing of the desired evidence coordinate points.
