Installing Hardware Locks | Back to User Tips

MapScenes and MapScenes Pro are available in a hardware lock version. This version is primarily meant for International customers but can be purchased by Canadian and American customers if desired. The Rainbow Software Sentinel Hardware Lock is a method of protection that replaces the software password required for the program. Using the hardware lock can provide greater freedom by allowing you to install the MapScenes or MapScenes Pro program on several computers but only have one licensed copy. You could simply transfer the hardware lock to the computer that requires it. The other computers will not be able to run the program without the hardware lock. This option is great for home and office situations. You must secure the hardware lock to your parallel printer port on the rear of your computer. Make sure the power is off before connecting or removing any cables or other devices from your computer!

Steps for installing the hardware lock version of MapScenes:

To tell the program that you are using the hardware lock instead of the password protection system you must install the Sentinel Pro Drivers. The drivers are included on your CD. (You should already have the program fully installed with the CD CAD Key number before starting this procedure)

STEP#1

For Windows 95 or Windows 98(and newer) :

Change to the \Sentinel\Win_95 directory on the CD and run SENTW95.EXE. Pick on the Functions pull down menu (near the top left of the screen) and Pick INSTALL. A dialog comes up to confirm the location of the drivers on the CD – simply press enter to accept this. Then exit out of the driver program. Your drivers are now installed for Windows 95/98, etc.

For Windows NT4 or Windows 2000 and XP:

Change to the \Sentinel\Win_nt directory and run SETUPX86.EXE. This file will determine which type of computer your NT is installed on and run the appropriate program to install the drivers. Follow the prompts to install the drivers.

STEP#2

After installing the appropriate drivers, as shown above, you need to copy two more files to make MapScenes fully functional with the Hardware Lock. The hardware lock version of the main MapScenes program DLLs are in a directory on the root of the CD called \HWLOCK. We found that some computers were having problems with the hardware lock code if they had non-standard serial ports, so we produced a special copy of the DLL for hardware lock machines. Before you can use the hardware lock version you need to copy UTILITIES.DLL and QS.DLL from the \HWLOCK directory on the CD, into your \MapScenes\PROGRAMS directory on the computer, making sure that you DO replace the existing files.

Then reboot your system with the lock already attached. Start the program, it should now run as expected.

Steps for installing Sentinel SuperPro hardware lock version of MapScenes Pro:

Insert the program CD into the drive.  When the startup screen appears with the installation steps for the program – pick on the exit option.  Leave the CD in the drive and run the Windows Explorer or My Computer program. 

Browse to the folder on the CD called Sentinel\Sentinel SuperPro\Sentinel SuperPro drivers and double click on RainbowSSD5.39.2.exe. 

STEP#1

Click on NEXT to continue.

Pick on:

I Accept the terms of the License Agreement.

Click on NEXT to continue.

Choose Complete Installation

Click on NEXT to continue.

Choose INSTALL.

(the locks we supply are not USB SuperPro)

Choose FINISH.

STEP#2a

If your operating system is Windows NT, 2000 or XP Pro or Home, complete the following:

Browse to the Sentinel\Sentinel SuperPro\Sentinel SuperPro server\winnt folder and double click on loadserv.exe.

Pick on INSTALL SERVICE.

Pick OK to complete the install.

STEP#2b

If your operating system is Windows 95, 98, 98SE or ME, complete the following:

Browse to the Sentinel \Sentinel SuperPro\Sentinel SuperPro server\win9x folder and double click on spnsrv9x.exe.

Nothing will appear to happen although it is installed.  The install happens very quickly.

STEP#3

After installing the appropriate drivers and server, as shown above, you need to copy the program files from the disk to your computer to make MapScenes Pro fully functional with the Hardware Lock.

Before you can use the hardware lock version you need to copy the following files from the \Sentinel\SuperPro HWLOCK folder on the CD into the \MapScenesPro\Programs folder on your computer:

dialog.dll

field.dll

geometry.dll

hookfunctions.dll

importexport.dll

labeling.dll

polygons.dll

programs.dll

projects.dll

reports.dll

serialcomm.dll

utilities.dll

mscad.dll

Make sure that you DO replace all the existing files.  

STEP 4)

Copy the following file from the \SuperProHWLock\SX32W.DLL folder into the \Windows\system32 folder.

STEP 5)

To correctly install and use the hardware locks with Windows 98, 98SE and ME and XP Home (not pro), there is one additional step to the process.

For Windows 98, 98SE and ME:

Copy the file \SENTINEL\Sentinel SuperPro\Sentinel SuperPro server\win9x\spnsrv9x.exe to the start-up folder.

i.e C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp

For Windows XP Home:

Copy the file \SENTINEL\Sentinel SuperPro\Sentinel SuperPro server\winnt\winnt\spnsrvnt.exe to the Start-up folder.

i.e. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

This will automatically start the service for you when you re-boot the system. 

STEP 6)

Exit out of Windows and Turn the computer off.  Connect the Hardware Lock to the Printer port and then turn the computer on again.

This completes the setup for the Sentinel SuperPro Hardware Lock version of MapScenes Pro.
